I Knew Her Well (1965)
Italian films the 1960s are just inherently gorgeous to look at. Something about the lighting is just unique compared to other black and white films at the time. The white is brighter and better contrasted. Can’t put a finger on what it is, but cities, streets, apartments and people just look great. Combined with a very loose and fragmented narrative, made this film bit of an odd experience to watch, as I wasn’t really engaged in the narrative and honestly didn’t follow along, but the general mood of youthful ambition and optimism being shattered by a ruthless business still got through clear enough.
