Antichrist (2009)

The opening is beautiful and horrifying with the contrast of the loving couple in intimate pleasure, and then every parents worst nightmare happening while they are distracted. The whole film is framed around the guilt from that event, guilt from letting biological pleasure neglect biological nurturing. Trier takes that primal urges to the extremes, and the whole film becomes a giant mess of symbolism. I think I get were Trier is going with it, but he loses me when the couple, magnificently played by Dafoe and Gainsbourg though, just become an instrument for the symbolic deep dive. They are not people with an interior mind anymore, and when there is only symbols and allegories left, then it is not for me anymore.
