Some Came Running (1958)
I would classify this a very character focused film over a narrative one. The story serves a dramatic purpose, but the film doesn’t spend that much time on it, instead we get great unique characters all around. Every major character is interesting, colorful, a little quirky and unique, flawed, charismatic and annoying - all at the same time. Even the minor single scene characters can be a delight, like the nun nurse. The back and forth jealousy and failed romantic advantages was really just a vehicle for fleshing out the great cast of people even more. However, the actual story does wrap up pretty bittersweet with a simple yet profound message about the importance of being loved by someone else. Great classic 50s melodrama.
