The Italian Connection (1972)
This turned out to be a different film that I first thought. It is almost Hitchcockian in its wrong man framed type of narrative. In the beginning it looks we are going to follow two hitmen on a job, but the focus gradually shift to the poor victim. He is really just an ordinary pimp, but not a big fish, and my sympathy grew for him as things progressed. There is no law-enforcement here, just injustice and secondary victims in the brutal crime world. This makes it somewhat unique in this subgenre, being much more personal injustice as it is stripped from political elements. In that sense, it is very pure, as the film is very clean it its emotional narrative, removing the need for sociopolitical allegories, and let the rhythm of the chase, the increase desperation and elevated feeling of unfairness drive the entire film alone.
