Pina (2011)

An unique kind of documentary, as there is barely any telling of who Pina was. Instead we see her choreography being enacted, with the occasional voiceover comment by other dancers who worked with her. In that sense, this feels similar to The Color of Pomegranates as it portrays the life and workings of an artist, through artistic depiction. So it is a bit difficult to convey how this works, but I did get a general sense of Pina as a fully committed dancer who worked her choreography around the depiction of longing and desire. That fascinated me from the start, with some enticing acts of dance and music. But admittedly after about 30 minutes, the magic was a bit gone, and as everything is filmed in a very neutral objective light, it lacked the inspiring film artistic cinematography from dance movies like The Red Shoes</>, Climax/i> or Suspiria.
