The Green Ray (1986)

As with A Tale of Springtime, it is almost magical how much this on the surface rather mundane narrative captured me fully from start to finish. There is again a massive feeling of “time and place” here, with 80s texture and care free summer vacation atmosphere. Nostalgic in a way. Which of course makes the contrast to Marie Rivière’s character all the more glaring, as she is sort of incapable of feeling happy and relaxed. We don’t need a whole lot of words to understand her state of mind, but it is not completely apparent either. Simply just beautiful.
