The Virgin Spring (1960)
Watched this as it is really the origin, sort of, for the rape-and-revenge formula, and an obvious parallel to Late Night Trains I watched yesterday. Not just in basic plot points but also with is themes of class differences, though Bergman leans more into heavy religious themes. Like with The Seventh Seal, I was impressed with the heavy themes and larger than life acting to some extent, but it is really very theatrical which I admit I have a harder time getting properly into. It looks gorgeous though and there is something to be said about having a narrative that later became the baseline of so many gritty city grindhouse exploitation films, set in medieval times bringing the overall theme of revenge and justice into a very religious wrapping.
