Crime Story (1993)
There are plenty of things that makes this a good film, such as the super gritty version of a Jackie Chan action film, well choreographed action and even some interesting elements of working rights politics in the mix. But the whole thing is also slightly “off” to one side. The tone shift between gritty and brutal, and the usual Chan style action humor doesn’t really land. It seems pretty clear that Kirk Wong was sidelined in favor of Jackie Chan, and that is a shame, as I think it would have been a much greater film if it was allowed to fully commit to its grittiness in style and ending. Still, and interesting showcase of what Jackie Chan style action can also be used for.
