Bacurau (2019)
I am sure there is a whole lot of political social allegories going on here that will likely open up the film in other ways, but it doesn’t strictly need that to be enjoyed. For me it was just a joy to watch a non-western style of filmmaking I am not used to, as it delivered so many odd turns and surprises and genre bends. I first thought this was going to be a social arthouse drama with some commentary on global south injustice, and it is that too, but also a crazy mixup of surrealism and brutal violence. That said, I was never really engaged in the Bacuaru citizens and their fight. Mostly just enjoyed the genre experimentation.
