Loulou (1980)
Loved seeing Huppert in a more relaxed role here. She smiles, laughs and allows herself to be silly. A big contrast to her more usual restrained and intense screen presence.
The film is in constant motion. People entering and leaving rooms, rarely staying for long. One lies down, another gets up. Very restless, just like the characters who don’t seem to know what they want either. There is an short term reference to everything they do. Like what do I want to do right now, and it might change a minute later.
Depardieu is a massive physical presence, more so than a sex symbol. He isn’t exactly charming, but he doesn’t really need to be as the women come to him all by themselves, which I did find a bit puzzling to be honest.
I mostly found this interesting for its place in time, especially with a younger Huppert. Her scenes with the ex-husband were the most compelling, where the tension and history between them felt genuinely alive. Several other parts of the film left me at a bit of a distance though, as the loose structure doesn’t always work in its favor.
