Slow West (2015)
This western is both very classic and modern at the same time. It really shows that it comes from a director that knows and love the genre, but also wanted to bring something different. The basic plot is familiar with a group of bounty hunters after a $2000 reward, just complicated by a young man totally out of his element in the wild west, who also wants to find his love: the same woman with a price on her head. It is poetically beautifully shot, contrasted with pretty bleak events. We are really thrown deep into the despair of the western frontier definitely NOT living up to the romantic promises. It was a film that simultaneously made me both very sad and hopeful, and really just in awe over the lovely pictures and the lyrical storytelling. Really unique western, but still very much a proper western. A rare feat.
