La Notte (1961)
There is only so much atmosphere and individual great scenes can do. While the similar narrative-less mood piece structure in L’Avventura was something I found captivating, La Notte only got there in glimpses. Mastroianni can usually bring a film like this home, but here he was just plain dull. Very little charm, charisma or inner thoughts going on here. Moreau thankfully makes up for some it, as the various almost wordless meandering scenes with her had something going for them. How she moves through the city, the weather and her face and range of emotions was much more interesting to look at. Just not enough to lift the film up to more than slightly interesting in fleeting moments for me.
