Le Samouraï (1967)
Seeing this after the various Japanese and Hong Kong hitmen film, this was an interesting contrast. An almost silent exercise in planning and procedure. It also feels like a very closed narrative. Costello’s fate is written and inevitable right from the start, and he knows it. The pieces just need to fall into place in the right order. That premise and sealed atmosphere is handled to perfection, but it did make the film feel a bit too closed and self-contained for me.
