Mulan (1998)
I did see this in 1998 but it is just outside my childhood nostalgic range of Disney movies, but seeing it being among the most highest rated of Disney animations, it was one I wanted to revisit. First of all, it is a proper grand war epic. Sure there is not much on screen violence, but the historic scale, the weariness of war and the sense of fighting for your life and country - is all very much present. For lack of a better term, much more “mature” than I normally attribute to Disney. Normally it is the songs that sticks with you, and of course this one has that one iconic song we all know, it was the score I really felt and took notice of. Again unusual for a Disney movie for me. The combination of classic Hollywood cinematic score with Eastern influences worked really well, and it fulfilled the immersion in the exciting high stakes dramatic scenes.
