Angel (1937)
Continuing the Dietrich week and the setting and narrative is certainly more classic here from Lubitsch than the sometimes otherworldly atmosphere from Sternberg, which brings out something different. This is very much a story of “what could have been” and I found myself thinking of Linklater’s Before Sunrise as it brings a similar temporary bubble for a short lived romance to live in. In Angel the romantic dream bubble is forced to face reality in the end, whereas in Before Sunrise the fantasy could continue. As 1930s romances goes, this was definitely one that felt much more emotionally attached than the usual overly melodramatic.
