Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

First time seeing this again after its theatrical release and if any movie was made to be seen at home in 4K HDR, it is this one. Of course this doesn’t only succeed in the visuals, it also achieves the almost impossible task of being a followup to the original. For me Villeneuve gives us more than just a great sequel, he manages to make Blade Runner more complete. It stands on its own, its builds upon on the original and everything becomes more than the sum of its parts. The original has always for me personally be a little tainted with some frustrations, which doesn’t have and therefore is a purer film experience. Or maybe it just feels more grounded in our present and how our relationship with technology has evolved since the 80s. Here the tech god Wallace feels pretty close to our present tech oligarchs and their desire for world dominiation, and it is interesting how most humans in this film is portrayed as very emotionally cold whereas the replicants are the ones with dreams, desires, doubt and growth. A remarkable achievement and among the best by Villeneuve.
