Flee (2021)
Using animation for a documentary is definitely an interesting choice, and I admit it was a bit distracting and off-putting at first, but it won me over. It somehow create both distance to the subject matter, and allow for the core story to stand stronger. The story is heartbreaking, and leaves me with a bit of guilt, because this type of story is something I have encountered often in newspapers, here and there in glimpses, so it isn’t a big reveal or new information that this is how it is for people fleeing their country. Which highlights what a well made documentary can do that apparently regular news coverage cannot.
