Woyzeck (1979)

Another Kinski and Herzog combination, that sits interestingly in between the narrower personal focus of Nosferatu and the descent into madness of Aguirre, the Wrath of God. This comes from a theater play and it shows, with every scene being long takes in mostly static locations. But unlike in the other Herzog films with Kinski, his madness here is literally controlled by others. Woyzeck has no agency or even much personal will here. The entire film is basically him trying to resist and failing. An interesting contrast to Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo where his character is the driving force that leads him into madness. Kinski is the master in such roles, and while this contrast was intellectually interesting, it lacked atmosphere and fascination for me.
