Sincerely Charlotte (1985)

Very very 80s aesthetics combined with cultural upper class French lifestyle, along with Isabelle Huppert made this sort of forgotten little film alluring to me. I confess the initial appeal to even dig this film out was Huppert, but I came to like the films environment and aesthetics overall. I would totally want to live in a house like the one Niels Arestrup’s character lives in here. Seeing Huppert being whimsical and frivolous is in itself a nice contrast to her usual screen presence, and that is the most appealing part of this film. The actual story is nothing groundbreaking with two people with a shared past crossing paths again, and in this case where the man is forced to re-evaluate his current relationship. Combined with a murder and a run from the police, does give the narrative some tension, but it never really seems like they are in any actual danger. I also never really felt convinced of their shared past as something so strong that it would make Arestrup’s character go so far. All in all, a perfectly comfortable trip back to 80s France with a young Isabelle Huppert.
