Unforgiven (1992)
While this film was undeniably groundbreaking in bringing the western genre into a new era and also had the meta-layer with Eastwood in some way parting with his older western persona, the film is incredible on its own merits as well. It goes further than almost any other western in what it actually means to kill somebody. Dying ain’t exactly pretty or easy or quick. Eastwood tears about the myth of the west, the fast gunslingers and our mental concept of the antihero. Seeking justice through violence just leads to more killing.
