We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974)

The most succinct way to describe this would simply be just Italian. Lots of meta-layers to Italian cinematic history, lots of almost clichéd shouting in Italian, use of creative and playful film techniques. There are parts that I found compelling, especially the battle between the matter of principle and practical survival. That dilemma comes up a few times in both funny and tragic ways. What makes it less stellar for me, is that is somewhat messy. It is an epic spanning decades, but it feels crammed and disjointed. Scola’s A Special Day had a stronger focus, and of course wins by a mile by having Loren and Mastroianni.
