Grand Hotel (1932)

This was just sort of - cozy. The very definition of ensemble films. I partly lost sight of the various narrative plotlines, but it didn’t really matter, because what shines is how much every small scene has. Everyone feel like real people with a backstory, with something from before and a sense of their life continuing after the end of the movie. There are scenes sprinkled with short exchange of words that become almost poetic and philosophical. There is plenty of acting, but that isn’t a bad thing when the almost 100 year old star power reeks through the screen. Every character in this was basically “quite a character” and the stars brought them to life.
