Phenomena (1985)

I think this is a case of Argento showing he can make plenty individual elements very well, but it doesn’t quite come together in this case. Nothing wrong with the creative camerawork, the use of lightning and the score is loud, bombastic and often takes the entire focus of a scene. Argento tried some new directions here with the unexplained supernatural control over insects Jennifer Connelly’s character has, though at its core the plot is standard giallo fare. But somehow with even clunkier acting than usual and a plot that frequently comes to a standstill. Yes things get spectacularly crazy in the end, which makes it worth watching, but it is mostly rehashes of previous concepts that doesn’t quite come together.
