La Ciénaga (2001)
This was a struggle to get through, which seems to be exactly what the director was aiming for. It is basically a loose narrative depicting indifference to your surroundings, yourself and your relatives taking to the extreme. Everyone here just sort of pretends to care for each other, but there is no emotion behind it. Total indifference. Just going through the motions without any real motivation. In almost every scene we see one or characters just lying down doing nothing, looking bored out of their minds. The film itself is making the boredom the main event, and with a cast of characters that almost all lack any sort of agency or any reason for us to care for them, so it was admittedly difficult to be engaged. It was sort of interesting that you can even make a film like that, where the indifference is all there is, but it didn’t take me much further than small academic interest in it as a concept.
