Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
The time between Christmas and New Years is a great time for long epic movies, and this is one of the grandest of them all. With small people in big landscapes changing history. Lawrence’s tale shows the dangers of creating heroic myths and the personal costs of doing so. Lawrence is at first drawn into the romanticism of changing history in heroic ways, but the reality is he is really just a pawn in the game of nations, leaving him completely disillusioned. Lawrence story stood out clearer to me this time around, but just as the first time I watched it, the magnificent texture with everything this film has to offer is mesmerizing. Other epics may have grand landscapes, bombastic score, beautiful costume design, impressive set pieces and massive scope, but few has all of those to same degree at the same time.
