The Master (2012)
This film is an impressive masterclass in acting and cinematography. Phoenix and Hoffman delivering performances among their absolute best in their careers. The cinematography combined with the set design is breathtaking to behold. Everything about the texture of this film is top tier. I just wish I could say the same about the actual narrative. While it is an interesting depiction of psychological manipulation and how charismatic cult leaders gain a following, it is also a film that somehow feels very self-contained. It didn’t seem to open for me at least with greater and larger themes about our modern society, like Magnolia or There Will Be Blood did. Maybe it is a film that needs more viewings, but my first impression left me mostly impressed with the technical and acting aspects in isolation.
