Peacock (2024)
I admit I don’t usually think of comedy when I think of German films, but some remarkably unique exceptions are worthy of praise. Follows a man who works as a very successful “companion for rent” for a company where clients can rent a person for a day to play whatever part they want. Like in the form of an interesting partner for a fancy party or “bring your dad to school”-days. These situations in themselves lead to underplayed extremely funny situations. Not sure exactly how to label the type of humor. On occasion it leans into cringe, but it is usually more absurd and subtle. In my opinion, many great comedies are at their core really a tragedy in disguise and we also see how this odd job gradually breaks him, as he sort of forgets how to be himself. Given the premise it isn’t exactly the most surprising outcome, but it is simply very well played with the right balance of absurd comedy and serious drama.
