Bugonia (2025)
I was initially drawn to Lanthimos for his way to confuse, distract and leaving the mystery open, but somehow his films has become more and more heavy handed and straight forward. This is loaded with exposition and metaphors that barely qualifies as metaphors. His films have always had a great deal of humor and so does this, and it is pretty funny, but I miss the undertone of uneasiness and wrongness that I found in many of his previous films. It is a rather entertaining narrative from start to finish, can’t deny that, but it feels like just we are just pretending to have fun with some serious themes, not really cutting deep. Most of the film is an open book, with little room left to think and feel. However all of that is mostly disappointment from hoping it would be something else, as the film itself was pretty entertaining and likely one of his more approachable films, as it for the most part pretty normal - with a sprinkle of his signature absurdity and extremity.
