Lore (2012)

Continuing with the WW2 theme, this time from a German angle (though the director is Australian), Lore deals with what happened right after the war ended in Germany. A time and place in history I haven’t seen covered much. Through a long and strenuous journey across a war-torn land, following five children, the film explores the realization of the Holocaust as the population is forced to confront what they’ve been part of.

It’s partly successful in that regard, using young Lore as a reflection of the general German populace. The story takes a bit of a literal detour to get there, and I wasn’t entirely convinced by the characterization of everyone, but I’m always drawn in by the 16mm look which did help to draw me in. It is a bit unfocused, but the film did have enough in it to get some idea on the state of mind Germany must have been in, in the months after the war ended. This film at least scratched the surface and dug a tiny hole, but it is far from the definitive film on that period. I hope, as I would love to explore more.
