Phoenix (2014)

The premise of this entire movie is not really believable, but it still works convincingly despite that. It works on a metaphoric level as it dives into complex themes of identity and self-understanding. Nina Hoss is magnificent with how her expressions are always full of internal conflict. The cinematography is also worthy of praise with strong colors and great look dark scenes. Through this admittedly a bit absurd love story of sorts, the film is good at planting questions on my head about how we deal with the aftermath of historic tragedies and how people redefine themselves. Not as strong as Afire, but Petzold is definitely on my list of directors I want to look more into.
