Rust and Bone (2012)
This film is an interesting look at two very different people who meet and find a mutual connection. Not attraction exactly, at least not at first, but something deeper that grows between them. What stood out most to me was how their relationship develops through the film, simply because of how different it is.
The main male character isn’t particularly sympathetic. He’s impulsive, careless, and often the cause of his own problems. But that’s also what makes him compelling, especially to the woman whose life suddenly changes. I’m not exactly sure how, but I have to acknowledge how impressive it is that the director makes the attraction between them believable, even when one of them is mostly an asshole.
It’s not a perfect film, as some parts feel a bit contrived, but I liked how it challenges the usual way we judge characters in this kind of story.
