The Girl with the Needle (2024)

A harrowing movie that is greatly heightened by the stunning black and white cinematography. I can’t recall a Danish film looking this artistically good. As expected the atmosphere is rather bleak and filled with misery of poverty. I knew beforehand what the story behind the film was, so it wasn’t a big shock reveal when we see what is truly happening, but I don’t think the film’s qualities lies in the horrifying true story itself. It is really about what kind of society drive people to do those things, where “the need” for such actions are created, why it forces people into a situation where they feel they have no other choice. Problems don’t go away just because you try to pretend they don’t exist. While the film could easily have been all misery, I like how it opens a door for compassion, for a way forward and for forgiveness.
