Find a Place to Die (1968)
Apparently this is pretty much a remake of an American western, Garden of Evil from 1954, and it sort of shows in that it doesn’t really feel like a proper spaghetti western. The setup is pretty good with a couple fighting to defend a gold mine, they get rid of the attacking bandits but a large wooden beam falls over the man pinning him to the ground, but still alive. Well, it was pretty much self-inflicted as he was throwing dynamite around in the gunfight. The woman rides to the nearest town for help, with plenty of gold to offer. The usual narrative follows with the usual number of gunfights and betrayals. It is not bad, just a little bland. What sets this a little bit apart, is the general use of landscapes as basically the entire movie takes place out in the open, and that it has a leading female character with proper agency. For the genre at this point in time, that is worth something, though it would be a stretch to call it progressive in any way.
