The Skin I Live In (2011)

This film was several kinds of messed up, delivering massive surprises and twists. Hard to talk about directly as I think it is best enjoyed with little to no pre-knowledge. It is not exactly typical Almodóvar, at least not the kind of films I know him for so far. It reminded me of films by Brian de Palma and Verhoeven for its erotic thriller elements, then part The Substance for its body horror and to some extent the French Martyrs - though not that brutal. Those comparisons out of the way, I think it falls a bit below all those. It has the concept down, but the film doesn’t stick the landing. Especially some character choices towards the end weren’t fully convincing or well developed for me to believe it. Still, worth watching for it WTF-factor alone.
