Tangerine (2015)
Like Sean Baker’s later films, this is raw, visceral, unapologetic, crazy, funny, authentic and with people living their day on absolute full intensity. It is marvelous to behold and somewhat exhausting despite the rather short running time. I mean, the whole premise is really rather dumb, with Sin-Dee utterly determined to go after whoever her fiancé cheated with, but the emotions feel real and believable. And so does all the little slice of life stories we get from everyone she encounters along the way. As usual, Baker portrays people on the fringe of normal society with a non-judgemental empathy, not with pity or a “we must save them from themselves” approach. It is great to see.
