Through a Glass Darkly (1961)

I am not really sure about these meta-philosophical Bergman films where faith and symbolism plays are huge role. At least the ones where it is more front and center aren’t so much my thing, though this is sort of in the middle as it very much a psychological portrait of four people. While Karin’s tragic mental deterioration is the center of the narrative, I think it is more about how the others are affected by it and how they all show some dark thoughts that aren’t exactly flattering. As usual Bergman goes deep into the uncomfortable depths of the psyche of his characters, revealing unpleasant truths. I think this was just a bit too theatrical for me to really get.
