Woman of the Hour (2023)
I didn’t know about the mass murderer Rodney Alcala before this, and this movie does tell the basics of his crimes and the absurdity of him participating in a TV dating show, but other than that, I am really not sure what this movie wants to archive. We see a handful of his brutal murders depicted, but it serves little point as all the victims are just anonymous young women and we don’t get to see much of Rodney either. The main story with Sheryl as the participant in the TV dating show does give a character worth following and empathizing with, but I still found her arc under utilized. Everything here is just presented too straight and plain, missing emotional impact. Of course there is an overall theme of a misogynistic society that doesn’t put much weight to women’s words or experiences, and it could have been a great story to dive deeper into that topic. This movie isn’t bad, just a missed opportunity that sadly doesn’t get very far with its depiction of its subject matter.
