The Future (2011)

The basic premise here is heavily drenched in symbolism and played as it is not to be taken literally. A couple in their 30s who are going to adopt a cat, and they conclude that their life is basically over when they get the cat in 30 days, so they make drastic life choices immediately. The absurdist premise works oddly enough, because it gives some situations that somehow capture the sort of mid 30s existential angst that hits some people. Even though the film is 14 years old, it feels to hit the current zeitgeist perfectly, as it deals with topics such as desire for real human connection in an online world, coupled with the millennial fear of turning 40. Probably just because I am in that age group now and it is what I see many people write about on blogs and forums these days.

The film actually reminded me of Marcel the Shell With Shoes on, which I hated, but this hits me better, even though it also has a annoying artificial squaky voiceover spilling life-philosophical platitudes.

Even though it was super weird and surreal, I was with the films themes for the first half. I think it lost me somewhat towards the end, but the existential questions the film raises aren’t meant to be answered anyways.
