BlacKkKlansman (2018)
I find it incredibly impressive whenever a film can deal with topics like racism, and maintain the fine line balance of presenting it using comedic techniques and still taking the subject matter seriously. Spike Lee manages this by having an all round engaging and entertaining story, with tons of hilariously absurd situations, but it is not sacrificing the deeper reality. The structure is on the surface pretty standard undercover cop narrative, but the extra layers of who is doing what makes it unique.
I am sure there are many differing view on how the ending works. I can understand if some feel that is a weird shift, but I think that is exactly why it works so well. I was having a pretty good time with an entertaining story, that also had a very Hollywood-ish good ending, and then we are slammed with reality. It is not all fun and games, it is not history from decades ago. I think it fits the movie perfectly. It is not tonal shift, but underlines everything that came before it.
