A Minecraft Movie (2025)
I have only limited knowledge of Minecraft, but my daughter wanted to see this, and I usually don’t say no to a trip to the cinema. We saw it with the Danish dub which probably didn’t help matters, though it was sort of tolerable.
To acknowledge what works. How they have created a good looking world in Minecraft style is pretty successful. I also did enjoy the relationship between Jack Black and Jason Momoa. They did provide a few genuine laughs from me.
While I do think the plot works for what it is, with its standard fare of finding an excuse to enter another world, like in the Super Mario movie, it just comes of as extremely lazy. There is a lack of cohesive storytelling. Most scenes are just made for a quick meme-worthy laugh or a bit in the trailer, and serve little purpose for the actual story. They often need to retort to voiceover or a character explaining what is going to happen to get the plot moving forward. There is nothing wrong with dumb jokes, goofy scenes or even moments that are completely pointless, but it shouldn’t be the meat of the runtime. I wish there were higher ambitions for movies aimed for younger ages.
