Roma (2018)
When I first saw this around its Oscar buzz, I was blown away. At the time I hadn’t seen a movie like that and only a fraction of the movies I do now, so the cinematography, long takes and intense yet calm scenes really impressed me. Rewatching it again now 6 years later and it didn’t quite have the same impact. I can definitely see why I liked it so much the first time, the core quality film making is still there, and the memorable scenes are still great. There is just also a whole lot of not very interesting scenes in between the amazing ones, and while I do generally like how Yalitza Aparicio portrays Cleo, she still lacks some emotional depth. I don’t think we really come close to her inner thoughts or emotional state, as the movie is at times seem to be more interested it creating beautiful looking scenery rather than really understanding its characters.
