Highway Racer (1977)

There is a plot somewhere about bankrobbers and a cop wanting to be the best at driving cars, but it is all just an elaborate excuse for driving nimble Italian cars very fast through city traffic. This movie gets off to a pretty good start with some pretty crazy car chases, ending in spectacular crashes. But it plays its hand too early, as most of the rest of the film is a long stretch of mostly nothing, with a few scenes with cars driving fast here and here. It all leads up to a final showdown, that in sort of western fashion, comes down to an “honorable race to death” between good guy and bad guy. Honestly, the majority of the enjoyment of this movie could be extracted by simply fast forwarding through and just see the car chase scenes. The rest is pretty forgettable.
