Suburra (2015)

This felt like a hardcore gangster version of The Great Beauty with a similar lovely looking aesthetics, extravagant surroundings and lifestyle, but with horrible people. A game of who is controlling who, with politicians and the Mafia working together for mutual benefit (and detriment), with a constant uncertainty of who has the upper hand. It becomes pretty clear that the politician gets very much out of his depth, and starts to regret the path he has started, but he can’t backtrack being so deep in shit.

What I think sets this apart from similar gangster thrillers, is how every character is portrayed. All feel like the real people, even though almost everyone is a horrible person, they still show regret, doubt, fear and re-evaluation of their life decisions.
