In the Line of Fire (1993)
I want to watch every Clint Eastwood movie and this is one of the few ones I was missing. It is a decent enough thriller, very much a product of its time, but Eastwood is not that great in this - Malkowich is. He makes this movie with his perfect balance of being mad but still smart enough to be really dangerous. I also always enjoy seeing John Mahoney outside of Frasier. The overall theme of sacrificing yourself in the line of duty and its conflict with self preservation was an interesting element, that gave this plot with an assassination attempt against the President a bit more than the usual. It just doesn’t deliver fully on that part, as Eastwood is solid but totally convincing with his internal conflict and you can see the end coming almost from the start. And that romantic subplot was totally unnecessary and not very believable.
