Light Sleeper (1992)
I haven’t seen a Paul Schrader film before and from what I can gather from reviews, many of his films are quite similar, but since this was my first, I was quite happy with it as it stands. It is very much a mood piece and the setting with dirty New York at night is compelling. Though I did find the use of music to be a bit much at times.
The narrative of a melancholic drug dealer with a midlife crisis is an interesting premise, giving plenty of contrast to his introspection and dreams of a better future. It becomes very down to earth that you completely forget his criminal and dangerous line of work, so when the violent consequences catch up with him, it has a different impact than most other films dealing with drug dealers usually have.
