Ride in the Whirlwind (1966)
I was halfway in before I realized this was made by the same people, and shot back to back, as The Shooting. They are also very similar in style and theme, with its slow nihilistic portrayal of the desolate American west where no rule of law or justice exists. The narrative is simple, but every scene is stretched way longer than one would expect. With the minimal use of score this cements the bleak undertone of desperation and desolation. The Shooting may be slightly more well known, but I think this is more memorable. A very far step away from the American western of the 50s with their big orchestral scores and role model heroes. It is independent movies like this that innovated the genre in the 1960s.
