Ginger & Rosa (2012)

Watching this in this current global political climate gives a perspective it probably didn’t directly have at release. As it takes place during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, what has a narrative of a coming of age drama for these two teenagers, adds an extra layer of existential dread on top of just being 17. Fanning gives a good performance of handling the myriad of confusing mental states a young girl would have at that age and under those circumstances. I wasn’t equally convinced about the rest of the cast, or the film as a whole, as it didn’t feel authentic and convincing with tendencies towards overacting and forced delivery. I wished it delved deeper into her existential fear with a nuclear war looming, but that has probably more to do with watching it today and not 12 years ago as the director didn’t see that aspect as the absolute main focus.
