The Human Condition I: No Greater Love (1959)

It was time for me to tackle this highly acclaimed war epic. It lives up to its title by utilizing a fundamentally dehumanizing setting to ask existential questions about the meaning of humanity. Through Kaji’s idealism we see how basic human decency constantly fights against, and ultimately fails, against the dehumanizing efforts of the military. It is not just a fight for basic human values but also a fight for the truth in a world where people in power construct their own reality. Which given the current global political climate is sadly relevant once again.
