My Name Is Pecos (1966)

With so many westerns covering more or less the same vengeance story pattern, it is the little differences that makes them still interesting to watch. This has a Mexican as the anti-hero gunslinger out for revenge, which may not seem like a big deal today, but given this came out in 1966 where Mexicans were usually portrayed as savage villains, it is noteworthy.

However, why Pecos is out for revenge doesn’t get revealed until very late, so his introduction as one that shoots to kill on slight provocation doesn’t immediately set him up as the good guy. That becomes apparent later when the bad guys go out of their way to really go all in on their abuse and attempt of rape of the pretty woman in town, where Pecos sets his foot down so to speak.

The movie is clearly on the lower budget end, the acting isn’t the greatest and the title song is hilariously hokey. Like a straight up parody of a revenge western song. But the movie makes up for it with its simplicity and tight pacing.
