The Hellbenders (1967)
A lesser known Corbucci but a really nice surprise as I had great fun with it. The story is rather bleak as we only follow a group of really bad guys. Mass murderers who with stolen money wants to restart the civil war in hope the Confederacy will win. Like in Django, a coffin without a corpse plays a central role for the plot. It is definitely not a lighthearted film, but compared to Django and The Great Silence it has some scenes that are quite funny in their situational setup where characters play tricks on each other. Norma Bengell is great as the assertive women that are sort of unwillingly along for the ride, and Joseph Cotten is amazing as the absolute delusional Confederacy officer. Definitely worth checking out for all western fans.
